Should I Go Lighter As I Get Older?
It is a question we hear all the time in the salon.
As our hair changes, many of us start wondering whether we should go lighter. Maybe grey is starting to come through more quickly, your usual colour suddenly feels a little harsh or you simply feel ready for something softer.
The short answer is that there is no rule that says you have to go lighter as you get older.
What matters is finding a colour that works with your skin tone, your natural hair, the amount of maintenance you are comfortable with and how you want to feel when you look in the mirror.
Why going a little lighter can work
For some people, softening the colour around the face can be incredibly flattering.
Very dark, solid colour can sometimes create more contrast against the skin. Introducing some lighter pieces, warmth or dimension can soften the overall look without changing your hair dramatically.
That might mean subtle highlights around the face, a few lighter pieces through the top or gradually moving your base colour slightly lighter.
You certainly do not need to become blonde.
What about grey hair?
Grey changes the conversation too.
If you are finding that your regrowth is becoming noticeable very quickly, lighter tones or highlights can help soften the contrast between your natural grey and your coloured hair.
Grey blending is another option. Instead of completely covering every grey hair, the colour is designed to work with it. The result can look softer and often grows out more naturally.
For some clients, continuing with full grey coverage is still exactly what they want. That is perfectly fine too.
Your skin tone still matters
Going lighter is not automatically more flattering.
The right tone is just as important as how light or dark your hair is.
Warm caramel, honey, beige, cool blonde, soft brunette and copper can all look completely different against the skin. A colour that looks beautiful on someone else may not have the same effect on you.
This is where a good consultation makes a difference.
Sometimes you just need dimension
If your colour feels too dark or heavy, you may not need a complete colour change.
Adding movement and different tones through the hair can make an enormous difference. A few strategically placed highlights or softer colour around the face can brighten your overall look while still allowing you to feel like yourself.
Think about maintenance too
A beautiful colour also needs to work with your lifestyle.
Before making a big change, think about how often you want to visit the salon and how much regrowth you are comfortable seeing.
Sometimes the best colour is the one that grows out beautifully and does not have you worrying about your roots every few weeks.
So, should you go lighter?
Maybe.
But the goal is not simply to look younger. It is to find a colour that feels fresh, flattering and right for you now.
Your hair changes over time and your colour can evolve with it.
If your current colour is starting to feel too dark, flat or high maintenance, talk to us about what could work. Sometimes a small adjustment is all it takes.
At Wiznu, we will always look at your hair, skin tone, lifestyle and how much maintenance you want before recommending a change.
Because the best hair colour is the one that still feels like you.
